Through this team we coordinate all aspects of compliance to health and safety standards, risk auditing and other initiatives that keep people safe. This applies to joint programs with the Hostels, Neelsie Centre Management, Botanical Garden, and includes inspections, auditing and planning.

About

The Food Services and Compliance Department is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of health, safety, food safety, project coordination, and operational excellence across all SUNCOM departments. The core function of the office is to create an environment where the well-being of all Stellenbosch University (SU) stakeholders is prioritised. Through fostering collaboration, the team works closely with catering partners, internal departments and external service providers to exceed expectations in service delivery.

Leveraging their expertise and diverse skills, the office continuously seeks new ways to innovate, streamline operations, and address challenges with practical, sustainable solutions. Their proactive approach focuses on continuous improvement, ensuring that all services are consistently aligned with the SU mission of quality and inclusivity.

The Compliance and Catering Office, situated within the SU Business Office (SunCom), has reported a significant achievement of: 0% food poisoning incidents in 2023. This can be traced to correctly following food safety procedures throughout 2023. This statistic is noteworthy considering the 806 693 online meal bookings recorded between 1 January – 30 December 2023 which are supplied by our four catering service providers. This achievement can be credited to the Compliance and Catering Office’s efforts to enhance efficiency and ensure compliance at all costs, thereby guaranteeing that stringent food safety standards are met to ensure the health and safety of our students.

💡 Did you know: The meal options provided to students consists of 8 – 10 varieties to accommodate allergens, dietary requirements and restrictions of our diverse student community. Each meal is prepared in accordance with nutritional guidelines to prioritise the healthiest ingredients at a low cost of R120.00 (max.) for three standard daily meal options (“Meals of the day”), Providing access to affordable meal options for students is a critical aspect of supporting their overall well-being, which underscores the primary objective of the Compliance and Catering Office.
